Fluoride and Dental Health
The cariostatic effect of fluoride, i.e., the ability of fluoride to reduce and stop cavities from developing, has been well documented. The presence of fluoride in the structure of the teeth improves their resistance to cavities.
However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effectiveness of fluoridated water in preventing cavities in adults.
Fluoridated toothpastes and rinses, along with controlled applications of fluoride by dentists and hygienists, may well provide the only legitimate route for cavity reduction.
Cornwall water has not been fluoridated since 2013.
Oral Heath
There is a link between Oral Heath and sistemic diseases.
Researchers show that untreated periodontal diseases affects negatively the immune system and elevates systemic inflammation.
Evidence-based studies support the relationship between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease.
Periodontitis, as well as gingivitis, are generally exagerated during pregnancy, and left untreated, could contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes.
